Are you following your true calling?

Are you following your true calling?

Mary McGuire·7 July 2025·2 min read

Many of us spend years—even decades—searching for that one job, career, or purpose that feels like our true calling.

Some people discover it early in life. They follow a passion, notice a natural aptitude, and everything falls into place. For others, it’s a slower unfolding—a path of trial and error, course corrections, and unexpected turns.

For most of us, it’s something in between.

We may land in jobs we tolerate or even love for a time, but it’s rare to find complete alignment—where our values, our vision, and the work we do come together in harmony.

True calling titleMy Journey to Purpose

When I first started working, I was in office administration roles across a range of organisations. The work felt repetitive, unfulfilling—and if I’m honest, I had no idea what I really wanted to do.

But over time, something began to shift. I trained in social work, and later, in business consulting. I realised that the common thread—the part that lit me up—was always people. Helping them grow. Guiding them through change. Supporting their potential. That, I discovered, was my calling.

But it didn’t happen overnight. It began with a few simple, honest questions:

  • What do I actually want to do?
  • What would I enjoy so much that it would make me feel alive?
  • What kind of work would bring me not just success, but joy?

Your Turn: Reflect on the Questions

If you’re reading this and wondering whether you’ve found your calling—or whether there’s something more out there for you—start with these reflections:

  • If you could describe aspects of true calling what would they be?
  • What kind of work would you do even if you weren’t being paid?
  • Can you see it, feel it, imagine it? And if so—what small steps are you already taking in that direction?

It might feel like a pipe dream to imagine a big shift. But sometimes, the opportunity is already right in front of you—waiting for you to notice it.

If your soul is quietly (or loudly) asking for something more… I encourage you to listen. Gently, courageously, and with curiosity. You never know where it might lead.
