There is a reason that women do not reach the same success as men in the workplace and it’s called gender socialisation.
From a very young age our behaviours are honed by how society determines that men and women should behave. This can lead to many ways that women are undermined or not taken seriously. For example women are more likely to be interrupted in meetings, to have their views ignored and even find that their great ideas are only accepted when voiced by male colleagues.
Don’t despair. With a little awareness and some simple techniques you can balance the scales in your direction and get you voice heard.
Here’s three top tips to take back your authority:
1. Notice and control your breath. We tend to make fast shallow breaths when under pressure. Try th 4,5,6 method; 4 seconds breathing in, 5 second held, 6 seconds for a slow exhale.
2. Tone of voice. Women are often not taken seriously, because they have a higher register of vocal tone. Focus on deepening your tone. This is often easier when paired witht the breathing above.
3. Don’t be steam-rollered. Women tend to be interrupted more in meetings or have their suggestions ignored. Notice if this happens in meetings, and gently and firmly make your point, even it means interrupting someone else to bring the attention back to your contribution.
These are particularly powerful in meetings, when your voice might not be heard, or you feel more comfortable letting the conversation roll on. Yet, doing that means that you are losing your opportunity to contribute. In online meetings, this can be especially so, as we find that we are often passive, or on mute much of the time. Use the tools available to you, such as putting your hand up, or simply coming off mute and finding a way to come back into the conversation.
Being known for your skills, experience and abilities is the key to career success. If your voice is not heard, how will anyone know?
